Purchasing a Firearm

Requirements and Documents

In order to purchase a firearm in Massachusetts, there are a few things that you need. Assuming that you have already gone through the Licensing process, we will talk about what you need for any purchase with a dealer in Mass.

  • First, you need the appropriate license. So, buying a handgun, you would need an LTC. Otherwise, an FID is all you need to purchase a Shotgun or non-large capacity rifle.

  • Second, you need to make sure that you bring that license with you, along with a second form of identification. A driver's License or US Passport for example, are acceptable. Other forms of ID are acceptable, depending on your situation

  • Most important, is the last item needed in Massachusetts, to buy any firearm. YOUR STATE ISSUED PIN. Not to be confused with the UPIN on the 4473 Background check.
    • For whatever reason, you are unable to locate you letter with your PIN, don't panic.
      • You can now retrieve the PIN number for your active license to carry (LTC), firearms identification (FID) card, or machine gun license through the DCJIS by calling (617) 660-4722 during the normal business hours of Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Some weekend hours are available. Please refer to the current year Gun Show Schedule.
      • The following information is required: Name, Date of birth, Active LTC, FID card, or machine gun license number, Driver’s license number (for identity verification).
      • Questions other than retrieving the PIN number should be directed to the FRB at (617) 660-4782.
